  • January to March


    Bandeira or Flag Festival
    It is dedicated to the local patron saint and is celebrated with great enthusiasm in mid of January at Divar Island.
    Large number of residents from Divar Island work abroad, who make a point to visit their home to celebrate this day. These emigrant workers parade around the village waving the flags of their adopted countries and singing songs in praise of the Saint.



    Festa do Reis or The feast of Three Kings
    It is held on 6th January at Reis Margos, Cuelim (Cansaulim) and Chandor. This is Goa's main epiphany celebration and a procession is taken out with three boys dressed in brocaded silk and a crown. They are seated on a horse-back and ride to the hill-top Chapel of Lord Jesus.

  • April to June

    1st Sunday after Easter : Feast of Jesus of Nazareth at Siridao

    Igitun Chalne
    This famous festival is held in the month of May at Sirigao Bicholim taluka of Goa. It is celebrated as a thanks giving day and devotees of "Lairaya" dress up in simple dhoti and walk over burning coal.

    Sangodd (29 jun)
    This is a festival of fisherman and is dedicated to St. Peter, the patron saint of the fisherman. It is mainly celebrated in the villages of Orda, Saipe and Candolim. On this day grand meals ae prepared and extravagantly costumed actors and musicians perform traditional dramas on the sea-shore and river banks.

    Hindu Festivals
    Hindu festivals are harder to date because they depend on the Indian Lunar Calendar.

  • January to March

    Maha Shivaratri
    It is specially celebrated at Kalvem, Sanquelim, Tambdi Surla, Sanguem, Ramnathi (Ponda), Brahmapuri(Old Goa), Sancoale/Cortalim.

    Shigmo
    Holi in Goa is celebrated as Shigmostav, which marks the arrival of spring season. It is held during the full moon period of Falguna.

    This festival of merry-making is traditionally celebrated in every village. Special celebrations are held at Fatorda, Kansarpal and Zambaulim. People sprinkle colors, sing and dance to the tunes of local instruments.

    Shigmo celebrations are almost similar to the famous Goan Carnival as both these colorful festivals are full of fun and excitement.

    Float parades are also organised in different cities, depicting various mythological scenes.

    Ganesh Chaturthi
    It is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the Lord Ganesha. During this time sheaves of grain arrive on the fresh crop, giving an indication of the harvest to come. Weeks before the festival local artisans get busy in preparation of idols of Lord Ganesha which are set on a beautifully decorated dais surmounted by a canopy hung with rows of seasonal fruits and flowers. This canopy, called a Mattolli is an indication of how beautiful nature bounty can be.

    Between the second to the eleventh day of installation, the idols of Lord Ganesh are taken out in a procession and immersed in the nearby water body.

    Dashera
    All over Goa, especially at Shree Navdurga Temple, Poinguinim, Canacona and temples at Ponda and Canacona talukas.


    Diwali and narkasur
    Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated all over Goa in a unique way. On the night before Diwali, hung effigies of the demon Narkasur are prepared stuffed with straw, papers and firecracker and are burnt in the wee hours.
