The Incorrupt Body Of St. Francis Xavier :

St. Francis Xavier, had spent 10 years as a tireless missionary in south-east Asia. He died on 2nd December 1552, but it was through his death that his greatest power in the region was released.

He died on the island of Sancian off the coast of China, where he was coffined too. Quicklime was used as preservative. The body was transferred to Malacca after two moths, and then the following year, it was returned to Goa. where it lies till date.

The body is placed in a silver casket, which is placed at the top for a religious observation. There are 7 panels on the casket, each of which has got 2 plates, one over the other, which are carved with important scenes from the life of St. Francis Xavier. You will also see sculptures of angels occupying the space between the panels. There is a huge cordon (barrier) to this casket, so you pay your respects from outside this barrier. The silver casket is lowered for public viewing only during the public exposition. Both international and domestic tourists visit the Basilica.
