Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary :

       This Sanctuary was established in 1969 and is the second largest sanctuary of Goa. It covers an area of 105 sq. km., which is the most densely forested part of the state.

The Talpona river flows through the park. There are several small settlements of Velip and Kunbis tribes inside the park, observing the traditional rural life style is quite an experience.

The sanctuary inhabits wild boar, deer, gaur and monkeys, panther, sloth bear, hyena etc., There are also several species of birds, which includes, woodpecker, Malabar crested lark and white-eyed-eagle.

The peaceful, scenic park makes a pleasant day trip from Palolem beach(12 kms.).

The jeep of Forest Department can be hired to go around the sanctuary with a free guide. For further details contact the Range Forest Officer by the Interpretation Centre at the entrance.

There is also a viewing platform, setup on a tall tree at Bhutpal 9km from the entrance, animals may also be seen around water holes at Tulsimol and Dhantali.

With the permission of the Forest one can have an overnight stay in the forest. Three tents with concrete floors are available free. A room is available at the Forest Rest house, Poinguinim.
