Calangute :

Means 'Koli-gutti', i.e land of fishermen.
In the early 70's Calangute was the hottest destination of the Hippies, especially around Christmas times. Calangute is also known as Queen of Beaches.

Calangute had a reputation of being the hub of hedonistic hippies has passed and it has undergone a change to become the center of Goa's rapidly growing tourist market. The hotels and resorts stretch almost without a break from calangute to Baga.

The beach here is very good to look for hours sitting at the beach side Shack's, enjoying your drink and food. Calangute is still quite peaceful as compared to major beach resorts in other part of india.

Remember that the beach drops pretty rapidly into the sea over here. So be cautious.
A lot of beach activities go around here around the day and over the night too, such as Dolphin rides, power boating, para sailing, water surfing etc.

The village of calangute has all basic facilities like post office, banks, foreign exchange offices, ATM's, Medical facilities etc., There are many huge handicraft emporiums from different parts of the country.
